summary

Bite into a controversial classic at one of Los Angeles’ oldest joints.

Wander a maze of books and pick up some vinyl in the place you least expect.

Join the club by playing your newest vinyl record at “the dumbest bar in LA”.

Cole’s, which opened in 1908, is in one of the longest running arguments in Los Angeles: who invented the “French dip”. To this day there is still not an official designation.
Stop 1

CLASSIC joint for a BITE AND COCKTAIL

• 8:30pm to 9:15pm •

Taking the few steps down into Cole’s removes you from the modern city screeching above and places you in a calm lair of yesteryear. Dark wood furniture, printed burgundy textures and bubble lights pleasantly greet you as you find your table in the saloon to the right. A beer sounds good but you’ll want to drink like one of “The Professionals” sealed on the wall behind the bar by ordering a Manhattan paired with a French dip trio. Rubbing elbows with the downtown business people you may get a history lesson from a local or a story out of a guy from Michigan, a classic time for a classic establishment. This will mark the time to pick up the beat and head to a shop of dreams.

Stop 2

pick up a record

• 9:30pm until you've found the right one •

Passing through the heavily fortified entrance of The Last Bookstore and into the towering main hall reveals its true colors as a part tourist destination, part bookworm heaven. Drift beyond the dystopian literature section and up the stairs for a quick gander at the book maze and local art before making your way back down to the “record shop”. Using the $10 rule gingerly flick through your favorites in the middle section or scour the white boxes in the back for some deep cuts. A right of passage that was almost lost due to the advent of technology. Now with a new favorite in hand you’re readily prepared to join a record club.

Stop 3

join a record club

• 10pm til you've worn out the grooves on the night •

The neon sign of Bernadette’s shines bright above the well-lit street sending an invitation to come join the “dumbest bar in LA”. The intimate room is a welcome sight to all visitors but on this night the room belongs to the ones with some vinyl. Make your way to the DJ behind the deck. This is Emily. She is the proud leader of Record Club LA and will reward your hard work scouring for a record with a drink ticket. A local craft beer or wine pairs well with your collective soundtrack as you relax in the corner. Looking around you recognize the artwork is reminiscent of the time of analog, the time of vinyl but then you realize that time is today.

Bonus: If the good times need to keep rolling stop next door to the Slipper Clutch for arcade game action.
