20.2 UPDATE (March 4 2025) lets ID crash

Contributor ,
Mar 04, 2025 Mar 04, 2025

Unfortunately the update to 20.2 lets InDesign crash whenever I close a document.

Luckily CC lets you revert to an earlier version quite easily.

Hey @100pk,

Sorry to hear that InDesign is crashing when you close a document. That sounds frustrating!
Just to clarify - did you save the file before closing, or did you close it directly from the document window? It would be really helpful if you could share a few more details:
  •  Which OS are you using (Exact version of Windows/macOS)?
  •  Does this happen with multiple documents or just one specific file? Please check and confirm.
We've seen similar reports from a few other users and are actively investigating the issue. For reference, check this uservoice: Indesign 20.2: open any document, do nothing in it and close it. Indesign gives a warning and then c... Confirm if you are facing similar issue.

If you've submitted a crash report through the Adobe Crash Reporter dialog, could you DM me the email address you used? This will allow us to check the logs and get a deeper look into what’s happening. You can follow the steps here to submit a report if you haven’t already: How to Submit Crash Reports. Your input will really help us narrow down the cause and work toward a solution. Appreciate your patience!

I am on MacOS Sequoia 15.3.1; MacBook Pro 16" M4 Max.

Using ID 20.1 flawlessly for some time now; when updating to ID 20.2 this behaviour occurred.

ID crashes when closing window (with close-X top-left) and choose ‘save’ in the process.

I trashed prefs; restarted, quit ID, restarted ID; etcetera.

After installing 20.1 all works well again. Nothing else has changed.

Hi @100pk,

Since everything worked fine in 20.1, this does seem update-related. You’ve already tried resetting preferences, which is great. Check out this recent thread where testing Safe Mode helped resolve a similar issue: InDesign 20.2 crashing after export to PDF / close file. If Safe Mode stops the crash, it could be a third-party conflict.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

Not being able to update again and try safe-mode. I did read the other thread though:

I am using Typeface too so that could be the culprit.

Maybe it is an idea to contact the makers of Typeface to make sure both apps work seamlessly together.

Hi @100pk,

Thanks for the update! Typeface might be the culprit, and our InDesign team is investigating. I’ll keep you posted on any updates. Let me know if you get a chance to test again. I'm looking forward to your update!

Was the 20.2 update temporarily pulled? It's not showing up on my Mac or Windows computers.

Hi @Dave Creamer of IDEAS,

The full phase rollout for InDesign 20.2 is now complete, so you should be seeing it available for update. It might not have shown up earlier due to the phased rollout, but if you're still not seeing it, let me know, and I'll check with the team.

This happens with me too. Previous version very stable but 20.2 crashes when closing a document. I am using Typeface 3.15.3 as a font manager too. Happens with arbitary documents - especially if I have multiple documents open.

Using Mac OS Sequoia 15..3.1

Hi @Lymper,

I'm sorry to hear you're running into this issue, too. When InDesign crashes, it's always best to submit the crash report via the Adobe Crash Reporter dialog box and include your email address while submitting. This way, we can check the logs and determine the cause of the crash. If you have already submitted a crash report, DM me your email on the community, so I can check the logs: Submit Crash Reports.

Moreover, the product team is aware of this crash while closing files and is actively investigating it. You can track updates on UserVoice (already mentioned in the thread). If this matches your issue, please upvote and drop a comment there.

From internal confirmations, it looks like the crash is linked to the Typeface app. As a workaround, try disabling Typeface and see if the issue persists. If you need Typeface, you can downgrade to InDesign 20.1 for now. Let me know if that helps or if you need any further assistance!

Looking forward to your update.

Turning off auto-activation in Typeface stops this happening in 20.2. Been working for a week or so without InDesign crashing on closing documents or exporting etc..

Also I only get the Apple crash log not the InDesign crash log - I have checked the setting and it is set for 'Always' but it never appears.

Me too. When I quit ID, crash. Hopefully, it doesn't corrupt files ... for now.

Going to revert to an older ID.

Please sort this out Adobe, shippign buggy software is wasting our time!

Disable the font manager and see what happens. I've had no problems on either my Mac or Windows system.

I can try.

Mind you, thats a bit like chopping the legs off of Indesign — decent font manager plus Indesign is the core requirement for what most of us do, I'm sure  — and interoperability of both parts is key. It's all been working fine thus far which is the frustrating thing...

I have the same problem of frequent (90%) crashes on closing documents using the latest versions of Indesign and typeface.

Not sure if this is your case, but often people forget about waiting until their utilities are updated and tested before jumping into new upgrades.

Hopefully it is helpful to share this reply I got from Floor, the developer of 'Typeface' app...

Hi Matthew,

The InDesign v20.2 update indeed seems to have trouble with Typeface auto activation. The Adobe InDesign team is aware and investigating the issue.

You can disable Typeface › Settings › Activation › Auto Activation for InDesign to prevent the crashes. Or revert to InDesign v20.1 which should still work correctly:

Hopefully the issue can be identified and resolved soon!

@Matthew A Interesting phrasing! Didn't actually say it was an InDesign problem...  😁

The same to mee, and it seems that Typeface as FontManager is involved.
I switched over to the previous version again, because this is running stable...
