This Week's Look INSIDE the Caltrans Coast Highway Culvert Project

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is working to replace the box culvert on Coast Highway at Main Beach. As a result, traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction on Coast Highway from Ocean to Broadway through the end of May.

Your Look at This Week's Progress:

Workers set steel in place for reinforcement before pouring concrete on Thursday, May 13.
On Friday, May 14, workers will be pouring slurry partway up around the box culvert during the day and making the storm drain connections on Friday night. The dewatering system, which keeps the construction site free of groundwater, will be removed from the construction zone. The rest of the slurry will be poured around the box culvert on Saturday, May 15 and then be given time to cure, which develops strength.

What's Happening Next:

Monday, May 17, the curbs and sidewalk will be poured in anticipation of the restoration of the grass area on Tuesday, May 18. Brick pavers will be installed on Wednesday, May 19 during the day.

Multiple full closures of Coast Highway are anticipated overnight next week.

  • Wednesday, May 19 from 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. to base pave the roadway.
  • Thursday, May 20 from 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. to grind and CAP pave the full roadway. CAP paving is the final 2” of asphalt that’s goes on the top of the roadway.
  • Saturday, May 22 from 8:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. to remove the traffic control and to complete the final striping of the roadway.

For project information, please email Caltrans Public Information Officer Darcy Birden or call her at (949) 923-7136.
