SNCDSB #Highlights JANUARY 2022

The Ministry of Education instructed school boards to pivot to remote learning beginning January 5th. Thank you to our educators and staff for the flexibility, commitment and care they have shown our students since the beginning of the pandemic. It is appreciated!

As we returned to classrooms on January 17, 2022, the safe opening of our schools remained our top priority. The COVID-19: Interim Guidance for Schools and Child Care document we received from the Ministry of Education, along with our consultations with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has informed our specific plans for a safe reopening.

Below are some of the key decisions and safety protocols that informed our safe reopening.

Monthly Virtue: Responsibility

St. Martin Catholic School Students and Staff Donate to Local Fur-Get Me Not Animal Shelter

St. Martin Grade 5/6 Students

Grade 5/6 students donated Christmas Gift Sale proceeds to the Fur-Get Me Not Animal Shelter. Students were able to donate $100.00 from their gift sale proceeds.

Pictured with Diana from the Furget-Me-Not are Mrs. Borutski and Ms. Critch, two of St. Martin Catholic School's biggest animal lovers on staff.

Staff had the pleasure of donating $100.00 from their St. Martin Catholic School staff dress-down fund to our local Furget-Me-Not Animal Shelter in honour of Betty White.

January 26th is Bell Let’s Talk Day. Our schools joined in to help drive meaningful progress in mental health. COVID-19 has affected every aspect of our lives, including our mental health. However, tools are available to support ourselves and each other.

This year’s Bell Let’s Talk Day campaign highlighted the ways that we can support ourselves and those we care about through actions like listening, being there and talking. Every Canadian can play a part in their communities, workplaces, schools and at home.

Mrs. Traintinger's Kindergarten class at St. Edward Catholic School enjoyed participating in Bell Let's Talk day on January 26th. The students learned about the Power of YET! We all know of some things that we cannot do YET but if we practice we can do those things! What a great mindset!

Students in Grades 1-8 at St. Hilary Catholic School listed self-care ideas for things they do when they are feeling down to help themselves feel better.

Holy Angels Catholic School shared positive messages and things we can do when we are feeling blue or when we notice that others might need a friend.

Grade 3/4 students at Holy Saviour Catholic School are learning about strong and stable structures by building towers out of paper that are over 1 Meter tall. Giving them a way that they can put into practice their learning about tension, compression, the center of gravity, and the strength of triangular shapes in structures.

Celebrating Victories!

During the pivot to remote learning, the Gr. 5/6 class at St. Joseph Catholic School led by teacher Cora Strain made the most of the situation to continue to build a school community.

This class started their own little "cooking show" during their lunch hour where they took turns teaching the group how to make different lunches! They choose to stay together at lunch, to laugh, and to learn from one another!

This grilled cheese is a victory in our fabulous little Grade 5/6 class!
"I call it a victory because it represents a group of 10-year-old kids who are challenging this pandemic with positivity! This crew has started their own little "cooking show" during our lunch hour where they take turns teaching the group how to make different lunches! They choose to stay together at lunch, to laugh, and to learn from one another" - Cora Strain, Grade 5/6 Teacher
Amazing snowmen designed from an aerial perspective! A project led by Ms. Michano and Ms. Dubreuil at Holy Saviour Catholic School in Marathon. A fabulous winter season activity for students to creatively apply artistic techniques and elements of design.

Family Literacy Day is held annually on January 27th and was created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

To celebrate Family Literacy Day, Mrs. Foulds' grade 1/2 students at St. Edward Catholic School retold the story of Mrs. Wishy Washy by presenting a puppet play!

In keeping with our slow return to school in January, St. Martin Catholic School in Terrace Bay celebrated Family Literacy Day pretty low key – classes spent time reading independently or listening to their teacher's favourite book.

As they hunkered down to read they got to enjoy delicious cinnamon buns and hot chocolate prepared by Mrs. Borutski, Ms. Critch and Mrs. Costa!

Thanks to Nicole Thomson for reading her book "The Little Things" to our JK/SK students at Our Lady of Fatima on Family Literacy Day. It was a great presentation and some important ideas about gratitude. Thanks to Vicky Budge of Frontier College for inviting us.

Living in Northern Ontario there is always lots of outdoor adventures.” “The main reason I got into education is that I love learning and I love the opportunity to work with people.
