Milligan University Indoor Track & Field 2021-22 Visual Preview

2020-21 AT A GLANCE

Men: 8th at NAIA National Championships

  • Milligan captured two individual national titles and earned four All-America awards at the NAIA National Championships.
  • The Buffs finished second at the AAC Indoor Championships after winning three individual and two relay AAC championships.
2021 graduate Tim Thacker won the NAIA national title in the mile. He won three AAC titles and was named the AAC's Co-Most Valuable Track Athlete and the USTFCCCA South Region Athlete of the Year.

Women: 10th at NAIA National Championships

  • The Buffs earned three All-America honors with national runner-up finishes in two individual events and the distance medley relay.
  • Milligan captured eight total (six individual, two relay) AAC titles and finished second overall at the AAC Indoor Championships.
Gabrielle Mardis graduated in December 2021 as a three-time NAIA indoor All-American (2x 3k, DMR).

HEAD COACH CHRIS LAYNE

Coach Chris Layne (Middle Tennessee State ’94) is in his 23rd season as the head coach of Milligan's cross country and track & field programs.

In November, he led the Buffs' to Milligan's first-ever NAIA national championships in men's and women's cross country and has coached 14 individual national champions and 128 All-Americans.

2021 STORYLINES

  • Defending Distance Champs - Milligan's men's and women's cross country teams won Milligan University's first-ever NAIA national titles in school history in November.
  • National Aspirations - The Buffs have several individual national championship contenders.
  • Under the radar - Milligan's sprinting and field units recorded impressive performances at the Buffs' opening weekend in December.

KEY RETURNERS

Nathan Baker

  • Senior Nathan Baker is a two-time NAIA individual national champion in the 3k (2018, 2021).
Baker was the runner-up in three events at last winter's AAC Indoor Championships.

Avery DeWolf Burton

  • Senior Avery DeWolf Burton was the national runner-up in the 3k last year.
Burton won three individual AAC titles and was named the AAC's Most Valuable Track Athlete in 2020-21.

Jake Crow

  • Junior Jake Crow returns after earning All-America status last winter in the 3k.
Crow qualified for the NAIA National Championships in the 3k in each of his first two seasons at Milligan.

Alyssa Bearzi

  • Sophomore Alyssa Bearzi became the 14th NAIA national champion in school history when she won the NAIA cross country title in November.
Bearzi recorded top-16 times nationally in the 3k and 5k in her debut season for the Buffs.

Key Newcomers

  • Milligan T&F adds 25 (16 men, nine women) to the roster for the 2021-22 track seasons.
  • Notable international newcomers on the men's side include graduate student Will Stockley, freshman Bryn Woodall and freshman Nicolas Motau.

SCHEDULE NOTES

  • The Buffs began their indoor track season with a split-squad first weekend at Appalachian State and the JDL Fast Track Dec. 3-5.
  • The AAC Championships are scheduled for Feb. 17-18 at the JDL Fast Track.
  • The NAIA Championships Brookings, S.D. are set for March 3-5.
