On the cover is Dexter Lamar Scott, a beloved 25 year employee who we lost on September 14, 2021. Dexter started with the City in May 1996 and most recently was THE MAN when it came to keeping our City streets swept. Dexter would often be driving the street sweeper while most of us were still enjoying the comfort of bed. After any special event on the Square, he would make sure the streets looked better than before the event had started. For those of us who knew him at the City, his jovial laugh was infectious; his spiritual encouragement uplifting; and stories of his beloved Barbara and children Dexter Jr. and Imani were filled with pride and unconditional love. Please keep his family and extended family in your prayers during this time of loss. We will miss you Dexter. Thank you for your dedicated service to our community and your friendship. Rest in peace our friend. #COVFamily #TeamCOV

In addition to attending, the Night of Hope planning taskforce is requesting that churches consider putting on performances as part of the event. There will be time slots of 6-8 minutes, in which organizations can have praise bands, children's choirs, dramas, skits, etc. We are asking for churches and faith organizations to consider bringing an act to the event. If you are interested in being a part of it, please select the button below:
If you have any questions, please email them to Bailey Dickinson at bdickinson@cityofcovington.org.
Participants in the P.A.I.N.T. Covington group started painting fire hydrants around the downtown area. We are excited and thankful for the artists who lent their talents to brighten up the Square with their creativity and whimsy! Make sure the next time you’re at the Square you look for these four hydrants. More coming soon!

After the Fuzz Run Expo concluded at 6 p.m., a Fuzz Run Kickoff Concert, in conjunction with the Arts Association of Newton, started at 7 p.m. and featured the 80's cover band "Members Only."

The 1-mile Fun Run kicked off the morning, followed by the Mary Beth Redbird Run for ages 5 and under which preceded the Fuzz Run 5K. PATROL
- On August 30, Drewey Hendry was arrested for threatening to shoot his supervisor, Keith Nelson, at General Mills. Hendry had a handgun in his vehicle. Officers spoke with several witnesses which confirmed the threats. Hendry was transported to the Newton County Detention Center and the handgun was placed in evidence.
- On August 31, CPD officers responded to a vehicle fire on I-20 westbound near mile marker 91. The vehicle was apparently broken down and the owners, from Mansfield, left it in the emergency lane. The vehicle subsequently caught fire resulting in the shut down of all westbound lanes while Covington Fire extinguished the flames. The vehicle was later towed away by Chancey’s.
- On September 1, unknown persons smashed out the windows of five vehicles in the parking lot of Pactiv on Lake Forest Court between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Miscellaneous items that were taken included bank cards, electronics and one 9mm hand gun. Later, officers discovered the stolen bank cards were used at the Wal-Mart on Panola Road. The transaction did not go through because the victim had already frozen the account.
- On September 2, CPD officers responded to an armed robbery at an address on Floyd Street. A male, later identified as Ethan Harper, entered a garage apartment through an unlocked door and produced a semi-automatic hand gun demanding money and a firearm. He seemed to know these items were in the apartment. Harper subsequently took a Colt AR15 from the victim and fled the residence on foot. The victim knew Harper because he had helped the victim move some furniture from his parent’s house into the garage apartment. CID Sgt. McCullough responded and officers received information that Harper was possibly at a residence on Thompson Avenue. Officers went to Thompson Avenue and made contact with the tenant who allowed them to enter to look for Harper. Sgt. McCullough and Lt. Cain located Harper in an upstairs bedroom and after a very brief struggle, they were able to take him into custody. The weapons used in the robbery along with the stolen rifle were recovered at the scene. The gun used in the crime also returned as stolen out of Newton County. Harper was arrested and taken to jail.
- On September 2, CPD officers responded to a call of a stolen auto at 9174 Washington Street. The victim stated the perpetrator(s) entered his residence while he was sleeping and stole the key to his Challenger. A Glock 19 9mm pistol wrapped in American flag markings and an AR15 were also taken. Officers discovered the victim’s vehicle was used in an incident in the county where shots were fired damaging the vehicle.
- On September 2, officers responded to the OYO hotel to an armed robbery. The clerk stated a light skinned African American male wearing a red bandana came in asking for a room. When the clerk told him the price, the male pulled a Glock 19 pistol and told him that he would give him the room. The male then left the scene in a small grey vehicle when he saw officers approaching. A Newton County Deputy saw the vehicle after a description was given, driving without it’s headlights, at Alcovy Road and City Pond. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle on 142 at Home Depot and the car fled from deputies. The chase continued into Henry County where the suspect was taken into custody. The male was suspected to be tied to a crime spree which spans at least three days in the city and county: theft of a purse at Wal-Mart; burglary/stolen vehicles; prowler/ shots fired call in the county; harassing call at CVS; armed robbery at OYO Hotel; and entering auto at Oconee Metal.
- On September 5, CPD officers responded to several entering autos where the doors were left unlocked and the perpetrators stole miscellaneous items. The streets where these incidents occurred were Crestview Drive SE; Forest Drive SE; Mill Street NE; Dorchester Drive SE; and Emory Street NW (The Depot).
