Preferences in Photoshop

Learn how to modify your Photoshop app preferences according to your workflows

Try out the latest features and enhancements.

Get started with Preferences

Customize and save your Photoshop app settings, including display, file saving, overall performance, presets, and plug-ins from the Preferences dialog box. These settings are saved if you quit the app, but lost in case of force quit or app crash.

By default, settings in Preferences migrate from a prior version to an updated version, and you can choose to Keep or Remove them upon uninstalling a version

Note:

Preferences are not saved upon rolling back to a prior version/update, which is why it's important to back them up prior to performing a rollback.

Search in Preferences

Use the keyboard shortcut command / ctrl + K to launch the Preferences dialog box and then command / ctrl + F to search for relevant suggestions. Start typing, and the search box will update as you enter text.

Once done, select Enter or See all results. Select an option to navigate to its corresponding section.

Set color theme

Go to Preferences > Interface and select Neutral Color Mode in the Appearance section to enable neutral color mode.

Support for native full-screen mode (in macOS)

Go to Preferences > Workspace and select Enable Native Full Screen to enable native full-screen mode in macOS.

Faster cloud processing

Go to Preferences > Image Processing and select Cloud processing in Select Subject and Remove background for faster, more precise subject detection and selection, even around complex edges and fine details.

Select Cloud processing from the Preferences dialog box for faster subject detection and selection

Improved selection stability

Windows users with NVidia GPU can improve the stability of the Object Selection tool, Select Subject, and Sky Replacement.

Simply go to Preferences > Image Processing and select More Stable in the Selections Processing field.

Adjust preferences

  1. Open the Preferences dialog box by selecting Edit > Preferences > General (in Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > General (in Mac).

  2. Select your Preferences category, like Performance to adjust RAM usage, GPU settings, and cache levels for better performance.

  3. Select OK after adjusting the settings.

Back up preferences

  1. Quit the Photoshop app.

  2. Go to the Preferences folder.

    • macOS: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
    • Windows 11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
    Note:

The user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS. To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see How to access hidden user library files.

Also, the AppData directory is hidden by default on WinARM.

  3. Copy the Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to an external drive, cloud storage, or any other backup location.

You can restore your preferences by copying this Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder from your backup location to the Preferences folder.

Reset Photoshop preferences

Back up your preferences before resetting them.

Using the keyboard shortcut or delete on quit preference to reset your preferences permanently deletes a subset of preferences files including settings from the preferences dialog, custom shortcuts, workspaces, and color settings. For a list of specific files that are deleted see these tables for preference file functions, names, and locations for macOS and Windows.

Follow these steps to reset preferences using a keyboard shortcut.

  1. Quit the Photoshop app.

  2. Hold down the following keyboard shortcut and launch Photoshop:

macOS: command + option + shift

Windows: ctrl + alt + shift

  3. Open the Photoshop app.

  4. Select Yes in the dialog that asks Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file? New preferences files will be created in their original location.

Follow these steps to reset your preferences using the Preferences dialog.

  1. Select Photoshop Preferences:

macOS: Photoshop > Settings > General

Windows: Edit > Preferences > General

  2. Select Reset Preferences On Quit.

  3. Select OK in the dialog that asks Are you sure you want to reset preferences when quitting Photoshop?

  4. Quit and relaunch the Photoshop app. New preferences files will be created in their original location.

Manually restoring your preferences is the optimum way of resetting Photoshop to its default state, as it ensures that plug-in preferences and any user presets causing issues are not loaded.

  1. Quit the Photoshop app.

  2. Navigate to the Preferences folder.

macOS: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Windows: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

    Note:

The user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS. To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see How to access hidden user library files.

  3. Back up the Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to a secure location.

  4. Open the Photoshop app. New preferences files will be created in their original location.

Disable warning messages

Select the Don't Show Again option to suppress warning or prompt messages. You can also select Reset All Warning Dialogs and then OK to redisplay all such messages.
