SNCDSB #Highlights JUNE 2022

Monthly Virtue: Honesty

The Gr. 1/2 class at St. Martin Catholic School attended mass to deliver the prayers from our school prayer wall.

Reestablishing the school-to-church connection and the importance of prayer, students throughout the school have slipped their special intentions into the spaces on the prayer wall, and the Gr. 1/2 class delivered them to offer the prayers up to the Virgin Mary and light candles for the intentions.

"We are going to mass today. YEAH!" was the student's response. They love attending mass.

The Rotary Club of Nipigon donated a Buddy Bench to St. Hilary Catholic School in Red Rock. Brian Davis approached each of the schools in the district about purchasing a Buddy Bench as a way to strengthen the presence between the Rotary Club and the Community at large as well as build a presence in each of the schools. The Buddy Bench will be permanently installed in the back play area at St. Hilary Catholic School.

The Buddy Bench was officially unveiled following the St. Hilary Catholic School Awards ceremony. Brian and Lee Davis were on hand along with student representatives from each class for the ribbon cutting.

Along with the Buddy Bench, the Rotary Club has also sponsored a Kindness Award that was presented at the St. Hilary Catholic School year-end awards celebration.

A Buddy Bench was also donated to St. Edward Catholic School in Nipigon.

Through Experiential Project funding, the Grades 1-8 students from Holy Angels Catholic School in Schreiber had the opportunity to learn a new skill: sewing! Through the funding and with the Educator initiative, the school was able to purchase sewing machines, patterns and supplies needed to complete the various projects. The students stepped out of their comfort zones and tried a skill that was new and never imagined they could do.

With the help of some Educators and their passion and skills for sewing, the students were able to sew Teddy bears, Aprons for Mothers Day and bunnies!

It truly was a real team approach and we hope to do more projects like this in the future!

On Friday, June 17, 2022, the Grade 7/8 classes from Holy Angels Catholic School hosted a Tri-Sport Tournament with the Grades 7/8 class from St. Martins Catholic School.

The students played Baseball, Volleyball and Soccer. The students enjoyed a pizza lunch along with some treats! It was a great day for each class to get to know each other a little better before the big step into High School in the fall.

A Big thanks to Mr. Fenton and Mr. Mauro for organizing this event!

The Grade 5 - 8 students at St. Joseph Catholic School in Geraldton and Our Lady of Fatima School in Longlac had the experiential learning opportunity of woodworking. Karly Baker, Math Lead for Superior North Catholic District School Board facilitated a woodworking workshop that was grounded in mathematical thinking and modelling. Students were first required to select their woodworking project of either a small chest or a birdhouse.

Students created a blueprint design and used ratios to scale the drawing. They were then required to determine how much wood they needed as well as other materials needed to build their project - thus integrating financial literacy. Prior to the hands-on learning days, students were required to watch a safety video outlining how to work safely with construction tools and materials. The hands-on learning happened on June 13 and 14, when students started measuring, cutting, gluing and nailing their woodworking project together. Students documented their projects in their digital portfolios.

To highlight Indigenous Education across the curriculum as well as celebrate Indigenous History month, students enrolled in Native as a Second Language at Holy Angels Catholic School in Schreiber and Remote Learning students from across the Superior North Catholic District School Board researched the long history and significant contributions of Indigenous Canadians. Student research was conducted to complete 90 squares that represent the periodic table of elements. The following categories included in the Periodic Table of Indigenous History were Athletes, Writers, Entrepreneurs, Visual Artists, Government, Activists, Musicians, Community/Education, Scientists/STEM and Famous Firsts.

The first people recognized on the table were students from Holy Angels Catholic School and their significance to Indigenous History. Many thanks to educators Cara Figliomeni, Brie Ann Copp, Niki Nesplak and Nicole O’Neill who collaborated on the creation of The Periodic Table of Indigenous History.

The Periodic Table is also an act of ReconciliACTION as a Legacy School, the partnership between The Downie Wenjack Fund and Holy Angels Catholic School.

#SNCDSB offered many different activities from local community Elders, Knowledge Keepers and community members during the month of June to celebrate and recognize #NIHM#2022 and #NIPD2022

On June 9th, Holy Angels Catholic School was invited to Pays Plat to participate in an Anishinaabe Language Day. Students and staff enjoyed drumming, games, rock painting, storytelling a scavenger hunt and lunch for all.

Thank you to the Anishinaabemowin Boodawe Committee for hosting!

Thank you to the Thunderbird Friendship Centre for having St. Joseph Catholic School students and staff join in the celebration on the cultural grounds for Indigenous Peoples Day! Thank you to the elders and to everyone who organized a variety of activities including booths and bannock tacos. Chi-Miigwetch!

Students at St. Hilary Catholic School participated in celebrating Indigenous People's Day by sharing bannock together and walking together towards Reconciliation by participating in a water walk to our marina. Students joined as a school community to share in the teachings the students received from Marilyn and honoured their ribbon skirts and shirts with a smudge followed by a drum and song. Chi-miigwech to Marilyn for sharing her amazing gift and knowledge with us!

St. Edward Catholic School celebrated National Indigenous Peoples day! Staff and students gathered in the gym for O Canada and sang in Ojibwe. One of the grade 8 students led the prayer in Ojibwe. Then Mrs. Borg and the student drummers sang two beautiful songs. Following the drumming they listened to the story, “We are Water Protectors.” The school community then gathered outside to participate in a smudge and then we went for a water walk. Students then painted Norval Morrisseau inspired art.

The Superior North Catholic District School Board would like to congratulate our graduating students. We encourage you to work hard, set goals for your life, serve your community, help others and never stop learning. Believe in goodness and show kindness. Superior North Catholic School Board was pleased to celebrate our office expansion attached to the St. Martin Catholic School in Terrace Bay, Ontario with an open house being held on June 11, 2022.

The relocation of the office building expansion in Terrace Bay from Simcoe Plaza to the new location attached to St. Martin School was completed in 2020, but with the pandemic, we were unable to hold our grand opening event. The expansion was required due to the required changes set out by the Accessibility Act; businesses and public sector organizations must be accessible to all, and modernization is required for compliance and safety.

The Superior North Catholic District School Board office is now fully accessible to all members of the North Shore Communities. We analyzed our requirements for the office and selected the most cost-effective and energy-efficient solution to meet the needs of our organization.

Superior North Catholic School Board is proud to be an integral part of the North Shore and will always strive to better serve our schools. We are committed to being a vital part of the economic and educational aspects of our community.

Superior North Catholic District School Board staff led children’s activities and playground games, demonstrations of the school LU interactive system, Virtual Reality Headsets, 3-D Printer and a tour of our new office building. Visitors were treated to a free BBQ. Thank you to everyone who made it out to celebrate this occasion.
