FUTURE FORWARD Campus Expansion

As the premier independent school in Alamance County, The Burlington School (TBS) offers leadership-focused academics, outstanding athletics and robust arts programming. TBS’s rigorous academics, cohesive curricula with personalized interaction and instruction, and vibrant learning environment make TBS one of the best college preparatory schools in North Carolina’s Triad area.

TBS’s vision and guiding principles are driven by our mission to foster intellectual curiosity and social responsibility, and to build excellence in academics, arts, and athletics. TBS maintains a commitment to our student body and community for exceptional education, and to provide an optimal learning environment that supports our students and faculty. As our curricula expands and our student body grows, purpose-driven transformational campus improvements and expansions will make our mission and guiding principles more visible, accessible, and impactful for our current students and future students, while also supporting and creating new ways for students and faculty to interact and succeed.

We are driven by our mission and these commitments to our students and faculty, and by an urgency for today’s students to benefit from advancements to TBS’s educational environment, while also positioning TBS for future growth and impact to our community.

Upon entrance, the plaza will boast a glimpse into the championship winning history of TBS's athletic teams. The lobby will also include additional office space, a meeting room, concession stand and ticket booth.

"This facility will not only inspire our school by offering an enhanced space for our athletics and school wide events, it will also provide vital classroom space that we need now more than ever." -Ronnie Wall, Head of School

Front Exterior

The front exterior of the gymnasium will serve as the connecting point for the existing campus structures. Located between the upper and lower schools, the front exterior will be an easy access point for middle school and upper school students to enter the facilities. The 4 additional core classrooms and music classroom will allow for expanded opportunities for all students.

“The additional academic space is a necessary piece of The Burlington School’s strategic plan. The classrooms will allow us to increase the number of students attending The Burlington School, while also providing enhanced opportunities for our students.”-JB Tanner, Director of Admissions

Back Exterior

The back exterior of the building will serve as a connector to future campus expansions. Future plan phases include a soccer field, track, tennis courts and a baseball field. The concession stand will be accessible in the back exterior of the gymnasium to be easily accessed during outdoor events. The back exterior of the facility will also lend itself to green space for increased outdoor educational opportunities.

“Our goal has been to create an exceptional learning space where students become well rounded, critical thinkers who are prepared to be future leaders. This capital campaign will allow The Burlington School to expand its reach and make an even greater impact on our community and beyond.” - Lummy Barnes, Committee Chair & Former Trustee

Gym

The gymnasium will feature a six goal, collegiate sized basketball court with a capacity of over 700 spectators. This space will host home basketball and volleyball games, in addition to campus-wide events. The gym will include a state of the art weight room and physical training room. The facility will contain 5 locker rooms and increased storage space.

“The new facilities will allow all students to benefit from increased opportunities and enhanced experiences – both in class and as participating student-athletes – helping them to grow now and to thrive in their future endeavours.” - George Marshall, Upper School Athletic Director, Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach

2nd Floor

The second floor balcony will give the facility a big time feel! This will be a viewing platform for our Spartans Club members, board of trustees and sponsors of the school.

We encourage our donors to pay their pledges over a 5 year period. Payments can be made annually, semi-annually, or quarterly at the discretion of the donor. A longer period may be considered for gifts greater than $100,000. Because these funds will be used to pay off debt associated with our building projects, a shorter pledge period would greatly benefit our goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will I have to pay my Future Forward campaign pledge? We encourage donors to pay their pledges over a five-year period. They can make payments annually, semi-annually, quarterly, or monthly at their discretion. A longer period may be considered for gifts greater than $100,000. Because these funds will be used to pay off debt associated with our building projects, a shorter pledge period would greatly benefit our goals.

How much should I give? That is a personal decision that only you can make. We are asking donors to consider giving at certain levels, knowing that a project of this size will require especially generous gifts from our constituents.

Are gifts of stocks, bonds, or real property accepted? Yes, by all means! Gifts of appreciated stock and property can often have substantial tax advantages for the donor. We encourage you to speak with your financial advisor to determine the best way to make a gift.

Will you accept planned gifts? Yes, but they will not count toward the primary Future Forward campaign goal. All planned gifts will be used at maturity to build the endowment or for other purposes the donor arranges with the school. In order to meet the need that the Future Forward campaign is designed to fund, we need current gifts in cash, stock, and appreciated assets.

Why now? The Burlington School has reached a critical point, and without the Future Forward expansion we will not be able to meet the growth demands of this community for a strong independent school.

Why these projects? The Future Forward must have space for our student body to grow. These projects are part of the Board of Trustees strategic plan to develop a campus master plan with input from all constituents. This plan supports TBS’s academic, arts, athletic, and co-curricular programming needs – considering current needs and projecting decades into the future.
