Laguna Beach City Council Extends The Promenade on Forest Through January 2021
Tuesday, the Laguna Beach City Council voted to extend The Promenade on Forest through January 31, 2021.
The Promenade on Forest: Shopping, Dining, Art, and You! is an outdoor dining, display and art performance area that creates a safe and exciting pedestrian-only experience on Forest Avenue from Coast Highway to Glenneyre Street in Downtown Laguna Beach.
Survey Results Show Public Support for The Promenade on Forest
The City of Laguna Beach conducted a survey to get your opinions of The Promenade on Forest, and presented those results to the City Council Tuesday. Over 500 people responded to the survey. Some of the results are below.
Key Features of The Promenade on Forest:
- Operating hours from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily through January 2021;
- Dining decks, retail display decks, and a performance art deck for virtual and live performances and temporary art installations;
- Layout to promote safe physical distancing between parties, hand sanitizing stations and maintenance staff to regularly disinfect the furniture;
- Face coverings are required at The Promenade. Free face coverings will be handed out to those who need them periodically;
- String lighting to illuminate The Promenade and provide evening ambiance and security; umbrellas, potted trees and plants to provide daytime shade and ambiance.

The 9th Annual National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is taking place now through August 31.
It’s the perfect opportunity for Laguna Beach residents to come together as a community to achieve a common goal, the designation of “The Nation’s Most Waterwise City!”
“Let’s be clear, we want you to keep washing your hands and cleaning and disinfecting your surroundings,” said Laguna Beach Mayor Bob Whalen. “But during these unprecedented times, having a safe and reliable source of water has never been more vital. The Mayor’s Challenge serves as a reminder that we must use water wisely so that it’s available in times like these when we need it most.”
City Council Honors Laguna Beach Police Chief Laura Farinella Before Upcoming Retirement
Tuesday, the Laguna Beach City Council honored Police Chief Laura Farinella with a proclamation for her exemplary service and impacts she has made to the Laguna Beach community while serving as the City's Chief of Police.
Farinella will retire on September 4 after serving as a law enforcement official for the past 30 years.
“Serving as Chief for the Laguna Beach Police Department has been one of the greatest honors of my career,” Farinella said. “I am extremely proud of the work the Laguna Beach Police Department has done and all of the new ways we’ve been able to connect with our community. I am confident the achievements and momentum created by this Department will continue to grow.”

Laguna Beach Mask Advisor Program to Continue This Weekend
To protect public health and safety and slow the spread of COVID-19, the City of Laguna Beach "Mask Advisors" handed out 2,100 free face coverings last weekend to those who needed them.
Most people contacted appreciate the free face coverings, and it is estimated over 90% of people are wearing face coverings while in the Downtown Laguna Beach area.
The Mask Advisor program will continue again this weekend throughout the City.
Traffic Impacts Expected During Upcoming Caltrans Culvert Replacement on Coast Highway
A Caltrans culvert replacement project under Coast Highway that will reduce traffic on Coast Highway between Ocean and Broadway to two lanes is tentatively scheduled to start in mid-late September. Traffic detours, signage and alerts will inform drivers of traffic impacts.
The Caltrans Laguna Canyon Culvert project will remove and replace the aging Laguna Canyon Culvert, which is a box culvert located under Coast Highway across from Main Beach Park. The box culvert gathers storm runoff water and disperses it to the ocean.
Caltrans crews will be working overnight at times to complete the work and replace the culvert as quickly as possible. There will be several occurrences during the project when Coast Highway will need to be closed during the overnight hours only. A detour will be in place during those instances.

Caltrans Installing Retroreflective Backplates on Traffic Signals in Laguna Beach
Caltrans is installing new retroreflective backplates on the traffic signal heads it owns and maintains in the City of Laguna Beach, and throughout the State of California.
Caltrans is doing this to make the traffic signals more visible in the event of a power outage or public safety power shutoff.
