#FishFreeFriday

The #FishFreeFriday campaign challenges people to remove seafood from their diet every Friday, encouraging an incremental approach to reducing fish consumption, while helping to raise awareness of the issues caused by intensive commercial fishing practices. Our goal is to reduce our collective fisheries footprint, one person at a time.

Please feel free to utilize any of the images, videos, or captions from our toolkit below to encourage others to join the movement. You can also create your own post detailing why you’ve decided to try out #FishFreeFriday or- if you’re already fish free- why you chose to stop eating seafood.

Abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear, also called ‘ghost gear,’ continues to entrap, entangle and drown marine life, acting like floating curtains of death until removed. Because much of the fishing gear that is accidentally or intentionally discarded in the ocean is made of durab2le plastic, this gear can continue killing marine life for decades or even centuries. You can help prevent this by joining #FishFreeFriday with our friends at @OceanicPreservationSociety @FishFreeFebruary @GoodCatchFoods!

Discarded fishing gear is a global threat to marine life. At least 10% of marine debris is estimated to be fishing waste, meaning that between 500,000 and 1 million tons of fishing gear enter the ocean every year. You can help prevent this by taking part in #FishFreeFriday!

Sea turtles must visit the surface regularly to breathe, so they often drown once caught in nets or on hooks before they can be released by fishermen. Bycatch poses a huge threat to these animals, with 6 out of 7 species listed by the IUCN with statuses that range from Threatened to Critically Endangered. One of the easiest ways you can help sea turtles is by going fish free! Try #FishFreeFriday with our friends at @fishfreefebruary @oceanicpreservationsociety and @goodcatchfoods to see how easy it is to make the swap to plant-based alternatives!

55% of the world's oceans is equivalent to four times the amount of all land-based agriculture! With over half of the ocean subject to "industrial-scale harvest," it simply cannot keep up with our demand for seafood. Lessen your impact by trying out #FishFreeFriday! It's a day to skip seafood or try out plant-based alternatives (we 💙 @goodcatchfoods). If you're up for a bigger challenge, keep an eye on @FishFreeFebruary!

It’s not just sharks, whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and pinnipeds who are caught as bycatch. As longliners set miles and miles of line, sea birds often attempt to grab some of the bait. When they become hooked, they’re dragged underwater with the sinking lines and drown. An estimated 300,000 seabirds are killed as bycatch every year and they are one of many reasons we’re taking part in #FishFreeFriday with our friends at @goodcatchfoods, @fishfreefebruary, and @oceanicpreservationsociety.
