2016-17 YEAR IN REVIEW: EDUCATION educating our student-athletes is the primary strategic objective of the department of athletics. Once again, billiken student-athletes posted a record-setting performance in the classroom. Scroll for highlights.

Billiken student-athletes registered a 3.45 GPA in the spring 2017 semester, the best GPA in a single semester in school history.

The women's cross country team led all programs with a 3.66 GPA in the spring 2017 semester.

All 18 Billikens' athletic programs, including the field hockey team (3.39 GPA), had above a 3.0 GPA in the spring.

81 percent (258 total) of Billiken student-athletes recorded a 3.0 GPA or greater during the spring. 49 percent (156 total) had a 3.5 GPA or greater.

57 Billiken student-athletes earned their degrees in 2017.

Kacey Bright (women's soccer) was awarded the A-10 Postgraduate Scholarship.

Bright, the A-10 Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Year, also was recognized as the Top Female Senior Student-Athlete at the annual senior student-athlete luncheon.

61 student-athletes earned straight As the spring 2017 semester. Every May, these student-athletes are honored at the annual Straight A Luncheon. 83 were recognized this past year.

Jackie Bynes (women's track and field) attended the Straight A Luncheon all four years as a Billiken. She graduated in May with a degree in Exercise Science – Physical Therapy.

Twin sisters Eleonore and Verginie Tchakarova, pictured here with head tennis coach Jon Zych, graduated with International Business degrees after achieving GPAs of 3.93 and 3.91, respectively. Those were the best GPAs of the graduating senior student-athletes this year.

Saint Louis University had a rare distinction of having three A-10 Players of the Year who also earned a spot on their sports’ Academic All-Conference teams. Kacey Bright (women's soccer), Jackie Kemph (women's basketball) and Danielle Rygelski (volleyball) were successful both in competition and in the classroom.
Brett Kowalczyk (men's track and field) earned a spot on the A-10 All-Academic Team for outdoor track and field.

Hiob Gebisso (men's cross country/track and field) earned A-10 All-Academic team plaudits during the indoor and outdoor track and field season.

Katherine Kelly (women's track and field) was a member of the A-10's Indoor Track and Field Academic All-Conference team, along with Hiob Gebisso.

Mike Crawford (men's basketball) earned a spot on the league's All-Academic team for a third year in a row. In addition, he was named to the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team.

Allie Macfarlane (top) and Alex Nickel (bottom) from the softball team landed on the A-10 All-Academic team.

Aspen Cervin (women's tennis) joined Eleonore and Verginie Tchakarova on the A-10 All-Academic team. Cervin also garnered Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

David Ferragut (men's tennis) was a member of the A-10 tennis six-man All-Academic team.

Isaiah Williams (men's swimming and diving) earned a spot on the A-10's Academic All-Conference team.

Mary Niehaus (women's soccer) joined Kacey Bright on the A-10 All-Academic team.

Max Karcher (men's soccer) represented the Billikens on the A-10 All-Academic team as well as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team.
