  1. De-clutter your user interface.

To keep users attention, avoid overloading them with content and keep messaging clear and concise, with the most relevant information at the right moment.

  2. Design for interruption.

Because mobile devices are used “on the go,” make sure actions are reduced to one per screen and allow users to save and re-engage with the app later.

  3. Make navigation self-evident.

Guide the user along their journey by combining recognized functions from other apps with your understanding of what the user is trying to accomplish.

  4. Make a great first impression.

Design an onboarding experience that gives users the information they need, but don’t let the experience feel generic or interruptive.

  5. Make navigation self-evident.

Every device has different conventions—make sure not to carry behaviours over from other platforms or you’ll compromise user experience and conversion.

  6. Design finger-friendly tap-targets.

Make controls between 7 and 10mm in size so that they’re easy for users to tap without missing their target or feeling frustrated.

  7. Design controls based on hand position.

Think about the hand’s position when placing controls, and make sure top-level destinations are within the thumb’s reach.

  8. Create a seamless experience.

Design your app for the entire user journey rather than a single interaction, so that users can switch between devices without interrupting their flow.

  9. Use subtle animation and microinteractions.

Delight your users with carefully considered details—like animated microinteractions, animated feedbacks, or in-app sounds that show your app’s personality.

  10. Focus on readability.

Resist the temptation to squeeze everything from desktop down so that it all fits—instead stick to the most important text at no smaller than 11 points.

  11. Don’t interrupt your users.

No one really wants to be interrupted, much less for something useless while they’re in the middle of something important. Avoid interrupting users by asking them to rate your app if they’ve only recently downloaded it.

  12. Refine your design based on user testing.

Test your app with users on a variety of mobile devices to see how the design really performs, and continue to make adjustments throughout the life of the app.
