Have you registered for Sailing Leadership Forum 2018? You can make a direct impact on the future of sailing in the U.S. by joining over 600 fellow sailors in St. Pete Beach, Florida on February 1-3 for Sailing Leadership Forum 2018. The Forum features a line-up of insightful presentations led by industry experts that address many important topics in sailing. Attendees will participate in over 70 presentations covering a variety of subjects, lively social events, hands-on activities and much more.
Many of these presentations focus on new topics and many expand on the presentations delivered at the 2016 Forum. Presentations will focus on participation and growth in our sport, operations and management best practices, what’s new in the world of technology and innovation in connection to sailing, safety education and instruction, takeaways for all type sailors, and creative thinking and outside the box approaches to modern challenges. Jet Lag (Stanford Alumni) Captures Hinman Trophy, Wins 2017 U.S. Team Racing Championship
This 2017 U.S. Team Racing Championship for the George R. Hinman Trophy featured a “who’s who” of college sailing’s present and past. Jet Lag, a team composed of Stanford University alumni sailors, had all the right combinations as the Northern California based team captured their first Hinman Trophy in Oyster Bay, NY.
Storrs Earns Prince of Wales Bowl; Potts is U.S. Match Racing National Champion
David Storrs and his international team won the Prince of Wales Bowl but it was second place finisher Pearson Potts and the Yankee Creole Racing team who walked away with the title of U.S. Match Racing Champion. Chris Kennedy and the Oakcliff crew took third and Janel Zarkowsky took fourth.
Steve Benjamin Takes First at Championship of Champions
In a unique test of skill and teamwork, 2017 Etchells World Champion, Steve Benjamin and his crew Phil Trinter and Christopher Larson, won the 2017 Championship of Champions in the Sonar, hosted by the WaterFront Center in Oyster Bay, NY.
Chicago’s Kennalley and Team Win 2017 U.S. Offshore Championship
The 10 teams racing in Navy 44 sloops at the 2017 U.S. Offshore Sailing Championship, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy Sailing Squadron, completed distance races and shorter buoy races on Chesapeake Bay to determine this year’s winner of the Lloyd Phoenix Trophy. In the end it was Brian Kennalley of the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club and his team of six crew who prevailed.

US Sailing Education Zone Makes Impact at Extreme Sailing Series™ San Diego
The Extreme Sailing Series™ returned to the United States for the first time since 2011 and the US Sailing Education Zone was on site in San Diego!
The Education Zone provided fun learning activities for youth patrons as part of the US Sailing Reach initiative for STEM education and sport outreach. Through interactive and hands-on activities, children had the opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics through the sport of sailing. US Sailing partnered with Mission Bay Aquatic Center, Sailors for the Sea, and Harken to create the Education Zone experience.
Mission Bay Aquatic Center, a US Sailing STEM Center of Excellence for the Southern California area organized a “Design your Own Sail Gutter Race” activity as well as a unique demonstration for kids to investigate how wind is generated around the globe making sailing possible for all of us.
US Sailing is organized the “Reach Simple Machine Scavenger Hunt” supported by Harken. Hundreds of participating youth had a special opportunity to connect science and sailing through mechanical advantage by exploring the association between six simple machines: wheel and axel, lever, pulley, screw, wedge and inclined plane. The youth participating in the scavenger hunt were challenged to find examples of all six simple machines in the Extreme Sailing Series™ Race Village. Those who completed the challenge received their very own ‘simple machine’ to take home, a block key chain from Harken.
US Sailing’s “Navigation Challenge” featured a list of items with clues for students to locate using a compass. Students navigated their way throughout the Education Zone and Race Village to various locations for a final prize.
Sailors for the Sea featured three different activities from their KELP (Kids Environmental Lesson Plans) program. All of these activities are focused on how humans impact the ocean and sea life with a specific focus on plastic pollution and marine debris. Participating youth learned how they can make a difference and become stewards of our waterways and ocean.

Reineke Takes Gold In Enoshima As US Sailing Team Embraces 2020 Olympic Venue
US Sailing Team Laser Radial athlete Erika Reineke (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won gold at the conclusion of a stormy Enoshima Olympic Week, the first large multi-class regatta to be held at the site of the Tokyo 2020 sailing competition during this Olympic cycle. The three-time youth and U21 ILCA World Champion dominated the 51-boat Radial fleet, leading wire-to-wire and securing an 18-point margin of victory against many of the world’s best in Enoshima, which also hosted the 1964 Olympic regatta. Reineke was joined in Japan by eight other national team athletes, as well as coaches and support staff.
2018 Youth Worlds Team Selection: Top U.S. Domestic Events To Be Used
US Sailing has released details of the athlete selection system for the 2018 Youth Sailing World Championship (July 14‐21, 2018), which will be held in home waters at Corpus Christi, Texas. In seven of the nine classes, the selection process will consist of two well-established domestic youth regattas.
