Visual & Performing Arts Leave Lasting Mark on Walls of RHS

Students, teachers, administrators and staff watched as a 40-foot wide mural, over a year in the making, was unveiled in the halls of Radnor High School on May 16.

Installed on the walls of the school's band hallway, the mural hangs between the auditorium and the school's main gym. It represents the Performing Arts at Radnor High School: band, orchestra, Meistersingers (chorus), and theatre.

The mural's ten panels are depictions of actual photographs taken of the various arts groups and were painted by members of the Radnor High School art club during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years. Lead student artists were Ahmet Duran, Anne LaCroix, Emily Spadaro, Jack Teehan and Grace Yang.

The photographs were converted to grayscale, projected and traced onto the panels.

"We all worked for so long on this project and spent many afternoons at school" said RHS sophomore Anne (pictured, left). "I’m really proud that our legacy will live on at this school."

Several elements in the mural were inspired by German artist Peter Max's illustrations from the 1960 and 1970s, including the repetition of music notes and star bursts as well as the text.

"Peter Max was chosen because of his work in the Pop Art style," art teacher Tracey Dean (pictured, left) said. "It allowed us to work with complex imagery in a clear way. Pop Art transcends time and my hope is that this mural will stay timeless as well."

The project was funded by a donation from band director Dan Drew (pictured, center, with art teacher Tracey Dean and REF executive director Sheila Palmer) using the monetary gift he received as the Radnor Educational Foundation's Educator Impact Award winner in June 2016.

"When I was looking for a group to donate the award to, I wanted to spend the money in a way that would reinvest in the school and represent as many students as possible," Mr. Drew said. "I chose Art Club because they do so many things in support of so many activities at RHS. The art students captured the excitement of our department."
