Commissioner's newsletter

July 2018

This is my first newsletter in the new format - for many of you this may be the first Commissioner's newsletter you've received.

For those of you who are new, this newsletter will be sent monthly giving you news, information and an insight into the work of my office.

Our engagement season is fully underway which launched with Exeter Pride back in May. This year my team and I are out and about across Devon and Cornwall speaking to members of the community about road safety and the potential merger with Dorset.

Check out the calendar on our website for events in your area.

Future Policing

The potential merger with Dorset Police.

Many of you will have seen in the news or online that Devon and Cornwall Police and Dorset Police are looking into the possibility of merging to become one police force by 2020.

We have been in a strategic alliance since 2015 working together in over 30 areas of policing.

Thanks to the hard work of officers and staff there are successful collaborations in some critical areas such as roads policing, firearms and armed response vehicles and dog units.

In September 2017 the two chief constables announced plans to investigate how the alliance could develop into a full merger.

Over the course of the summer we will be discussing what a merger could mean for you and your community and seeking your views.

No decision has been made - your views will be vital in deciding if the proposal will go ahead.

We want to hear from as many of you as possible so please make your voice heard by completing the online survey at www.futurepolicing.co.uk.

More information about the proposal is also available here.

Commissioner hopes to see pilot women’s residential centre in Devon and Cornwall

The Ministry of Justice has announced plans to trial five residential centres to help offenders with issues such as drug and alcohol rehabilitation, educational support and finding work.

These centres replace plans for women's community prisons in England and Wales.
