5th Annual Elementary STEM Night April 11, 2019

Hundreds of Radnor Township School District students in grades K-5, joined by their parents, put on their lab coats to experiment like scientists, think like engineers, problem-solve like mathematicians and create like techies at the district's fifth annual Elementary STEM Night on April 11.

Becoming A Neurosurgeon!

Elementary school students teamed up with members of the Radnor Chapter of the International Youth Neuroscience Association to surgically remove “tumors” from a simulated brain, made of jello.

The event featured more than 20 exciting and interactive STEM-themed stations for students to experiment and explore, all manned by district staff members and students, district parents and local professionals. Parents and students built their own schedule for the evening and selected three different activities to complete during separate 30-minute sessions.

Exploring Animal Adaptations

Students explored animal artifacts and got to meet a live animal, Bubbles the turtle, from Riverbend Environmental Education Center's collection of Animal Ambassadors.

Sessions included: A Day in the Life of a Veterinarian, Arduino and Raspberry Pi, Balloon Buggy Racers, Become a Neurosurgeon, Blockly Coding Games, Build Your Own Digital Pet, Coral Reef CSI, Crystal Bay, Exploring Animal Adaptations, Fizz Bang Boom!, Functions Come Alive in Funvill Adventures, Germbusters: What's Lurking On Your Hands, Gumdrop Structure Challenge, Meet Nao the Humanoid Robot, Plaque Attack and How Teeth Move, Radnor Library's Explore the Universe, Robotics Playground, Spaghetti Tower, The Sky Tonight, Visual-Motor Coordination, and Who Are Engineers.

A Day in the Life of a Veterinarian

Students looked the part as they learned what a veterinarian does, and investigated some interesting cases, with veterinarians from St. George Hunt Memorial Veterinary Hospital.

Facilitators included: Bryn Mawr Hospital, Bergmann, BSD Code + Design, Center for Aquatic Sciences at Adventure Aquarium, Execupower, Main Line Classical Academy, Parnes and Hill Phamily Orthodontics, Radnor High School, Radnor Memorial Library, Radnor Middle School, Radnor Township School Distirct, Riverbend Environmental Education Center, St. George Hunt Memorial Veterinary Hospital, Stars on the Move, Uncommon Individual Foundation, Villanova University and Wayne Elementary School.

Blockly Coding Games

Students practiced their coding skills with Blockly Coding Games, a series of educational games that teach computer programming.

Elementary STEM Night is presented annually by Radnor Township School District's Department of Teaching and Learning.

Rubber band BUGGY RACERS

With the help of Radnor High School students, attendees explored the concepts of potential and kinetic energy. They were also challenged to build a buggy using only the supplies provided.

Thank you to all the students, parents, staff members and presenters who made the night a success!
