Radnor On Display Educators Visit RHS to See an Apple Distinguished School in Action

Fresh off Radnor High School beingĀ named an Apple Distinguished School, school and district administrators and teachers welcomed more than a dozen educators from seven different Pennsylvania and Delaware schools to show off technology initiatives at RHS, including the school's current 1-to-1 iPad Program and how the devices are used to enhance instruction, on April 19.

The visit was the first Radnor High School will offer each year as part of its 2017-2019 Apple Distinguished School designation. The school was also recently named a Project Lead the Way Distinguished School.

The day began with introductions and an overview of the technology offerings and infrastructure at Radnor High School, including information on the ongoing Technology Integration Study. Speakers included David Diokno with Apple; Dan Bechtold, RHS principal; Dr. Byron McCook, RTSD director of technology; and Dr. Maureen McQuiggan, RTSD director of secondary teaching and learning.
Representatives from Ancillae-Assumpta Academy (DE); Downingtown Area School District; Great Valley School District; Howard High School of Technology (DE); Nobel Learning Communities, Inc.; Rose Tree Media School District; and Salesianum School (DE) attended the four-hour program and school tour, which was organized by RHS assistant principal PT Kevgas with support from school and district staff. Radnor High School students Kyle Addis, Philip Gilbert, Brendan Hung, Joanna Vines, Rachel Marciano and Max Xie led the guests around the school to see technology in action.
Visitors were given a "menu" of classes to check out, where additional informational materials awaited them.
World Literature teacher Dr. Alexis Swinehart (left) discussed her use of "gamification" to engage students as part of a unit on genocide. "Students are able to move independently through the levels, which helps maximize the instruction," Dr. Swinehart wrote in materials provided to attendees. "The game also allows me to conference one-on-one with students, providing more individualized instruction. Students have been excited to see their rank on the leaderboard and are excited to receive badges."
Guests also visited Amber Andrewlevich's Chemistry class; Arsha Cipollone's Intro to Algebra class (joined by RTSD social and emotional coach Dr. Dan Cane and RHS literacy coach Frances Misener); Tracey Dean's Intro to Ceramics class; Erica Benedict's Statistics class; and David Wood's Government & Economics class.
The day included a Teacher and Student Panel Discussion and Q&A and concluded with a group lunch. Visitors were bid farewell, hopefully taking with them valuable information they can put to use in their own schools.
