Spending in Retirement and Financial Shocks: Qualitative and Quantitative Evidence Wednesday, May 2, 2018 3:00:00 PM Coordinated Universal Time - 4:00:00 PM Coordinated Universal Time
Retirement modeling tools make assumptions about how retirees will spend down their accumulated assets to fund their retirement needs, but do people actually behave like this? Hear from experts that have analyzed both qualitative and quantitative data to explore this topic. Sudipto Banerjee will explore analysis he conducted as Research Associate at EBRI using data from the Health and Retirement Study that shows actual spending patterns among retirees. Sudipto will also delve into a critically important factor in spending behavior: the likelihood that a retiree will receive an enormous shock in the form of out-of-pocket health costs. Anna Rappaport Chair of the Society of Actuaries Committee on Post-Retirement Needs and Risks will compare findings from interviews with long-term retirees and their families on how they have coped with managing their finances during the first decade and a half of retirement, including adjusting to financial shocks along the way.
