School Spelling Bees
Jones Intermediate School and Mount Airy Middle School students have held their grade level bees. Winners will compete on Tuesday, February 4th at Mount Airy Middle School in the district-wide bee.
Academic Competitions
Mount Airy Middle School and Mount Airy High School compete in a variety of academic competitions. Some are part of the NCASA competition list while others are associated to various clubs and organizations. Some of the NCASA competitions include: The Quill, Twelve, Forensics, Art Showcase, Quiz Bowl, Dance Ensemble, and Show Choir.
Saturday, December 7 marked the 2019 State Finals of The Quill, the state writing competition for middle and high school students in North Carolina. The event was hosted by Hope School and saw students responding to prompts in Argumentation, Problem/Solution, Narrative (middle school), Creative Writing (high school), Informative/Explanatory (middle school), and Literary Analysis (high school). In addition to the 90-minute on-demand writing session, students heard local editor Bobby Burns speak about his experiences as a writer.
2020-2021 Registration

MAMS Top 5% for Growth in NC!
MAMS Earns Schools to Watch Redesignation!
MAMS has had multiple years of quality instruction and innovative programming which led to this award being earned in 2014 and redesignated in 2017. Most recently, student achievement has been celebrated as the 2018-2019 accountability data ranked MAMS in the top 5% for growth and top 11% for proficiency in North Carolina. Additionally, 7th-grade mathematics ranked #1 in the state and 6th-grade reading ranked #9 in the state. The school’s staff should be commended for the high level of instruction and care they have continued to exhibit toward students and families.
Holiday Art Contest Winners
Zach Smith Grant Recipients
Mount Airy City Schools is pleased to announce that The Zach Smith Fund of The Winston-Salem Foundation has awarded 12 educators in the district with grants.
These grants will assist teachers as they continue to lead, innovate, and serve in the classroom and community. A total of $16,473.72 was granted based on the advice of the fund’s Advisory Committee.

Legislative Update
The General Assembly will return in January and we hope they will approve a budget and address teacher pay.

Great Work!
Going the Extra Mile
BHT would like to recognize Beth Welch for her dedication to our PreK program at BHT. She actively seeks community donations in order to provide costly assets for our school. She recently secured a large donation for sand for our PreK playground and also recruited a volunteer to deliver it at no cost to us. We appreciate Mrs. Welch for going the extra mile at our school!
Jones would like to recognize Amy Cook for going the extra mile. Amy is organizing the Blood Drive this year at Jones. Her efforts with the American Red Cross demonstrate a strong community partnership and how working together can benefit all.
MAMS recognized Sabrina Moore who stepped into 6th grade math and science last year and worked tirelessly to ensure that students were prepared for the end of grade assessment. She put in extra time that she did not have to in order to meet the needs of each individual student.
MAMS recognized Courtney Jones who is part of the office staff and is a big part of the good feeling and optimism people have about the school. She is always very professional and represents the school well. Each time people call her with a need, Courtney quickly responds and the staff appreciates her very much!
MAHS recognizes Michone Coleman and senior Olivia Malone. By working closely together with our custodians and student groups, there is renewed interest in recycling at MAHS. After only three months, 55 containers have been collected by the City of Mount Airy. Their leadership and effort are making a big difference in our community.
Central Office wants to recognize our principals who work every day to support our students in extra ways. We have feedback all the time about our principals greeting our students every day, working hard to secure their buildings, and leading educational practices in every building.
Innovators of the Month
BHT would like to recognize Mrs. Kelly Johnson as our Innovator of the Month. Once again, she has wow-ed our students with another fantastic Innovation Day. Time after time, Mrs. Johnson provides new and different innovative opportunities for our students. Through these sessions, students learn new things and gain experiences they may not have had otherwise. Mrs. Johnson's theme for this Innovation Day was Reading with STEAM, this approach illustrated to students how important reading is. No matter the situation, all innovators are readers! Great job, Mrs. Johnson!
Jones would like to recognize David Puckett and Landon Branson. These two men volunteered to tackle a painting project in the media center at Jones. Their efforts on this project saved the school money and made the media center look absolutely amazing!
Tarona Hollingsworth worked diligently to help facilitate the Schools to Watch re-designation process for MAMS. She was required to dig deep into our data and collect surveys from staff and stakeholders in order to gain a comprehensive snapshot of our school. This took a lot of time, effort, patience, and innovation.
Tanya Davis's leadership has brought a renewed focus to our Occupational Course of Study program. By working together with community partners, she is helping provide meaningful career exploration and job opportunities for her students. Her attention to detail and personal attention given to each student will better prepare them for life after high school.
