Ithan Elementary School Celebrates 51st Annual Yellow Day February 23, 2018

Ithan Elementary School students and staff celebrated the school's annual Yellow Day by wearing yellow clothing and enjoying yellow treats on Feb. 23.

Staff members enjoyed a breakfast of yellow treats in the library, organized by the 2nd-grade team.
Library clerk Maureen Daws cooked fresh pancakes on the griddle.

Yellow Day began in Winter 1967, when Ithan's 2nd-grade teachers decided they were tired of the gloomy winter weather and decided a day of brighter classrooms was needed. It is now celebrated annually on the last Friday of February to welcome the upcoming Spring.

This year's event also featured the school's February Nest Meeting.

Through Ithan NESTS, students learn the importance of working together in positive ways.
Nests are groups of students across grade levels that meet regularly for fun learning activities with a purpose.
Students are assigned to a Nest teacher/mentor for the duration of their time at Ithan.

Nests is a school-wide mentoring program that allows students to meet regularly in cross grade level groups and experience lessons on kindness, school community and bullying prevention.

In February, students participated in a team building exercise called "Pass the Clap" and made "Caring Canisters" for a local homeless shelter.

Students write notes of encouragement to be included in kits for the homeless.

The event was supported by the IES Parent-Teacher Organization, who provided yellow treats (popcorn and lemonade) at lunch and donated supplies for the service project. The group also collected donations for Alex's Lemonade Stand.

Thank you to the entire Ithan Elementary School community for your support of Yellow Day!
